Exercise #677: Craft
Posted  7/1/16

Another exercise brought to us by Richard Kirby. Go, Richard!

Richard suggested, “Significant detail can add depth and meaning to a story.  Detail is significant when it echoes the plight of a character or reinforces the theme of a story. It can seem incidental at first but then take on importance for the reader’s understanding and enjoyment.

An example is the following: a woman on her way to meet her estranged husband notices a beautiful rose blossom.  Her husband, however, shows no desire for a reconciliation.  On the way home, she observes that the rose has been shattered by the wind, an echo of her shattered marriage.

For today’s exercise, write a story showing significant detail reflecting the story’s meaning.”

There you go. Write us a story!
