Exercise #648

Exercise #648: Craft
Posted  12/4/15

When our protagonist is in trouble, we want the reader to feel the danger. We have a lot of tools to do this, including verb choice, variation of sentence length, vivid descriptions and setting up a believable problem. All of these added to the reader’s affinity for the protagonist work together to make the reader flip those pages faster or refuse to put the book down.

For today's exercise, write the “cliffhanger” section of a story. Use the tools mentioned above (and any others you can think of) to help the reader feel the urgency of the moment.

Critiquers, along with a technical review you might answer these questions:
     * Was this exercise helpful to you as a writer?
     * Why or why not?
     * Did you feel the danger to the protag in the piece?
