Exercise #103: Self Knowledge
Posted 4/15/05

When you say “quality time,” what do you mean? What constitutes quality time for you? For your significant other? If they're different, how do you manage to find something to enjoy together?

If you choose, you may write about a character enjoying some quality time.

Word limit: 500 for your own piece, 1200 for a character piece

             SUB: Exercise #103/yourname

A friend of mine once complained to me that her husband never spent any quality time with her. I asked her what she thought quality time was, and her answer was not a surprise: reading, movies, dinner out. Then I asked her what her husband’s idea of quality time was. She paused and then said, “I don’t know.”

How can you enjoy quality time with your spouse when you don’t know what they enjoy? Relationships are sometimes about compromise: tonight might be his night for quality time. It’s important that we know what quality time is, both for us and for the important people in our lives.
